Chocolate Tart

City Social

31 March 2016

“There’s just something about a city skyline…” These were my first words when we sat down to dine at City Social. My friend laughed and said I sounded very “Carrie Bradshaw”. She was right. I definitely felt like I was in Sex and the City; jazz, cocktails, the twinkly lights of the city and a meal with two of my best girlfriends.

As you may have guessed City Social is another one of Jason Atherton’s visions with the distinctive word “social” incorporated in most of his restaurants’ names.

We were greeted by our helpful waiter who brought us some mocktails to start. Mine was a bit too sour for my liking but my friend loved hers…

The menu deliberation was one of the longest yet. If I’m interested by almost every main course that is listed then City Social has obviously got it right. Two of us spent a good 15 minutes flitting between the options and constantly bothering our waiter for his recommendations. He suggested the cotswold chicken for me…with smoked mashed potatoes, ceps, truffle & watercress.

Chicken seems a little “simple” for a restaurant of this standard so I was really keen to see how they would “spruce” it up. It was smooth, soft and delicious and I was pleased with my choice. The smoked mash potatoes were incredible and I wished there was more of it!

My lamb lover friend picked the Romney Marsh lamb fillet and navarin of lamb shoulder with a bacon crumb and mint. It looked exquisite…

And for the main event, the Scottish lobster with duck fat chips, salad and choron sauce. Choron sauce is bearnaise sauce plus tomato.

Those chips…

Seeing as we skipped starters, we picked two indulgent desserts. The coconut soufflé with chocolate ice cream. My first and only soufflé experience prior to this was at Le Louis XV in Monte Carlo so this one had a lot to live up to. Unfortunately I could taste more egg than coconut.

 And the prettiest chocolate tart…

We had a lovely evening at City Social but there’s a but. The food was lovely and the views were stunning BUT I feel as though City Social was heavily overpriced for what it was. If money is no object or this is a super special occasion, then I would definitely recommend it. However if you’re looking for a more reasonable alternative and a more casual atmosphere check out Little Social. “I can’t help but wonder” what you’ll think… 😉
